When you play against the AI, you're first asked whether you want to play with the light pieces (and move first) or the dark pieces (and let the AI move first):
Assuming you choose the light pieces (which means you will make the first move), the initial board setup looks like this:
Before and during every move, the current player will be indicated at the bottom of the board.
You can click Quit at any time to exit the app.
You can now drag and drop one of your playing pieces to a legal point. (Instead of dragging and dropping, you can also click on the piece you want to move and then click on the destination.) This may be a regular move or, if a jump is available, a jump over one of the AI's pieces.
If you have jumped over one of the AI's pieces and an additional jump is available, you will be notified that you have to Keep jumping.
By default, you don't have to play a piece even if you've already touched it: You can simply click on a new piece and make your move with that piece instead. In the preferences, you can activate the touch-move rule, which forces you to move a valid piece once you've touched it, like in chess.
Once you've released your piece, the AI will make the best available move given the strength you've specified in the preferences (default: search depth of 3 moves and countermoves).
You can speed up or slow down gameplay by adjusting the delay between moves in the preferences (default: 1 second).
Once you or the AI wins a game – or the game ends in a draw – the win or draw will be tallied, and you'll have the option of playing another game with 0, 1, or 2 players.
At any time when it's your move, you can click Resign. A win is chalked up for the AI, the board is cleared, and you're returned to the main menu.
By default, takebacks are allowed. When it's your turn, you can click the back arrow twice to take back the AI's last move and your move before that, allowing you to make a different move instead. The AI will then resume play.
Takebacks can be disallowed in the preferences. This will remove the back and forward arrows from the game board.
When it's your turn and if takebacks are allowed, you can click the back arrow once to take back the AI's last move. You can now override the AI's move by making a move manually with one of its pieces.
Attention: The AI will then assume you want to switch sides, and it will continue playing with your (original) pieces while you continue to play with the AI's (original) pieces. If you want to continue playing with your original pieces, you can simply click the back arrow once again when it's your turn and override the AI's last move with your own move. The AI will then continue playing with its original pieces.
If takebacks are allowed, you can click the back arrow as many times as you like, all the way to the beginning of the game. You can then use the forward arrow to step forward through the game you've already played. At any time, you can manually override any of your moves or the AI's moves and continue gameplay from the new board configuration.
